Amazing Aurora and It’s secrets revealed – Tromso

Aurora Lights
Written by Mani Rathnam
Aurora Lights, and its name derived from Roman Goddess of Dawn. Aurora, the Roman goddess traveled from East to West announcing the rise of Sun.

What causes Aurora?

To answer this, let’s go back to our school days. We all studied and very well aware that Sun is gigantic ball of burning gas. Ionic explosion of electrically charged particles triggers a solar wind which travels through Solar system. Collision of Solar winds with Earth’s magnetic field causes Aurora Lights.

Where to find it ?

Aurora also known as Aurora Borealis or Northern or Polar Lights can be seen in higher latitude area like Arctic or Antarctic circles.

My journey towards Aurora..

Just like everyone did their research, I did my own. Back then, I was staying in Copenhagen[Capital City of Denmark] and that’s where I started my journey. There are many places across the globe from where Northern lights can be seen. But I preferred Tromso, town in Northern Norway. They call Tromso as Arctic capital, not just because of Aurora alone, there are many more to see and astonish yourself in this beautiful city. Within Tromso, there are hell lot of tourist guides offering good packages and hospitality for your smooth visit of Lady Aurora. Among all, I preferred Chasing Lights, tourist company with higher success rate.

Hold on !! Why did I say success rate? Yes, you heard it correctly. You should be lucky enough to see the dance of Lady Aurora. Because it won’t happen every where and every time. Guides will be constantly in touch with concerned department to get the clear co-ordinates of Aurora happening area. Sometimes, during the journey they may change their course to a new place.

Make sure, you packed your winter gear, if you don’t have, you can ask the guide and can borrow it for rent.
So the date and location is finalised. I was so excited and been waiting for this day and finally it came. I boarded into a flight in Copenhagen on a snowy day to Oslo [Capital of Norway]. After 2 hours of transit in Oslo, boarded into another flight to Tromso. We checked-in to hotel and refreshed. By evening 5, we reached the bus pick-up location shared by the guide.

Cheerful moment..

Aurora lights mostly will be in Yellow, green and blue. It happens when Ions collide with Atmospheric particles like Nitrogen and Oxygen.
Finally at 6.30PM, we started our journey to view point. Roughly, after 2 hours of journey,  we reached the view point and the guide made the camp ready along with Bonfire. All we have to do is sit and wait. We had our first sight @9.30PM and I was very much disappointed as it totally different when compared to my expectations. Slowly, after 30 minutes, Aurora was glowing and I started feeling surprised with the nature’s creation.

Travel team served us with Hot chocolate, a much needed drink in that freezing temperature. While people were dancing near bonfire, I made new friends and we talked about the Aurora and started our journey again.

Here’s my trip collage .. 🙂
